Academic Avisor / Instructor Tracey Harvey from Ft. Lauderdale Florida interviewed new artist SHONIE. She shared with Tracey about getting signed to Slip n Slide records and her journey to getting the deal.
Immediately after moving to Miami, at the age of 17, SHONIE was offered a recording deal with an independent record label in Miami named “South Beach Records”. It was there that she released her first nationally distributed mix tape, which was hosted by the infamous DJ Khaled. The female vocalist originally came onto the music scene as a rapper. “I have the gift to be versatile, so I plan on showing both sides.”Â
That was then and this is now, when asked about her future goals and objectives surrounding her career, SHONIE states that she “plans on branding herself as one of the greatest female entertainers that has ever blessed a microphone in this industry.” In the journey of this long road we call life; everyone has to have an alternative motive or a great theory, Shonie’s great theory consist of nothing more than making great music, or better yet as she identifies it as ….. “Bringing the ‘heat’ nonstop”.
Maria is a native of Wilson North Carolina were she attends Hunt High School. She is passionate about about videography and uses her skills to raise awareness about issues facing the youth. In her spare time she enjoys making music videos and mini dvd’s for friends and family. She aspires to go to film school and from there produce documentaries. “Brand Newz is the perfect outlet for me to display the positive things that are going on in my community and meanwhile enhance my craft.”
Gang violence seemed to be getting out of hand in Greensboro. Last summer, while participating in an internship for the city of Greensboro, Maria Williams decided to try to find answers to the growing gang problem. She interviewed teens from the city, took pictures of gang taggings and created a video to show to city leaders and politicans. “I wanted to expose city leaders to the issues teens face daily”. Since then citzens and leaders started to take action against the problem and Maria got alot of exposure for her efforts such a news story on the local station and an article in the News and Record.
