“Beauty and Brains” The Beauty and the Geek Story
May 24th, 2007
Just like the 1984, 20th Century Fox’s, Revenge of the Nerds chronicles, the WB Network, gave birth to its new bread of nerds and beauty titled, ‘Beauty and the Geek,’ which airs on CW 22, currently at 8:00 PM.
‘Beauty and the Geek,’ is a reality television show, produced by MTV’s reality-punks Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg along with Tony Soprano’s boss Nick Santora. Beauty and the Geek first aired on the WB Network, in June of 2005. Due to its extreme success, high ratings and viewers interest the show grew to be known as “The Ultimate Social Experiment.”
Each Season the show selected sixteen (16) individuals, to compete in a list of extreme events for two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars ($250,000). The sixteen (16) contestants were evenly divided into eight (8) beautiful females and eight (8) male geeks. The female beauties and male geeks are paired as couples to compete for a quarter of a million dollars.
The women are selected from a number of beautiful women that have solely relied primarily on their looks and bodies to get jobs, careers and a means of income while the geeks on the other hand, financial stability comes primarily from their brains and intellect.
The careers of the beauties and geeks were from one extreme to the next. Some of the careers and hobbies of the beauties involved more skin, less education and more beauty included: lingerie models, spokes models, bikini models, sorority girls, NBA cheerleaders, hairstylist, cocktail waitresses, hooters waiters and practically life-size Barbie dolls.
On the other hand most of the careers and lifestyles followed by the geeks included no beauty only brains, cognitive and analytical skills. Some geeks were speed chess champions, computer programmers, Neurologist, Boy Scout assistants’, Mensa members, MIT and Harvard graduates, with a few that had did the impossible and probably done did it twice, scoring perfect SAT scores.
Each episode or season the couples compete in a list of diverse events, challenges and competitions surrounding the following: dancing, spelling, Math and Science, massaging, phone number getting, automobile repair, public speaking, karaoke, interior decorating, speed dating, party planning, library book search, news interviews, dog house building and outdoor and physical challenge. At the end of each season a couple meets their faith and losses the right to the quarter of a million dollars and the opportunity to advance into the next season.
After participating, many of the contestants say that they have learned a lot about different social groups, both positive things and pros about human nature in general. Some beauties developed a change of heart for the Steve Urkel and Screech like brainy acts.
Many countries, book film and television companies including: MTV, REN TV, TF1 and TV3 have explored the looks and books concept far before now, from the “Beauty to the Beast” to “The Doll and the Nerd” to “The Princess and the Professor”.
But no book or film has mastered the concept better than Jeff Buhai and Tim Metcalfe’s fictional Revenge of the Nerds. The Revenge of the Nerds and Adams College made being a nerd and geek, not only acceptable but pleasurable and rewarding.
Geeks, remember the following lyrics of the Nerds;
1. Lambda Lambda Lambda is our fraternity;
2. We are her royal subjects, and she is our queen bee.
3. We have no groups excluded, we don’t discriminate;
4. We just ask that you keep your G-P-A at 3.8.
According to Wikipedia, the use of the word “nerd” as slang goes back as far as 1951, when it was reported as a relatively new usage in Detroit, Michigan first by Newsweek and then later used by the St. Joseph, Michigan, Herald-Press. By the early 1960s, usage of the term spread through the United States and as far as Scotland.
Beauties, remember beauty is far deeper than the skin. Inner beauty is a concept used to describe the positive aspects of something that’s not physically observable and far more important and valuable than outer appearance so remember; beauties can still be pretty ugly.
