“Hey Mr. DJ”! The Busta Brown Story
October 29th, 2007
102 FM Jamz radio personality, DJ Buster Brown uses his radio presence to reach the masses. Buster has been in radio broadcasting for ten (10) years and with 97.1 FM WQMG for close to three (3) years now.
Buster also established a non-profit foundation with one of his close friends, Alex Rickett, a Greensboro police officer. The foundation was established to help young people between the ages of twelve (12) and eighteen (18) years of age. Brown tries to make sure that everyone involved feels comfortable talking about a variety of issues that affect youth. They provide a sense of direction regardless of the need whether it’s mentally, spiritually, academically or physically.
One of the organization’s major projects is producing the “Teen Image Awards.” The program is set up somewhat like a Grammy for kids. There are eight (8) categories, athlete of the year and teacher of the year are among two of them.
The foundation also tries to inspire parents, and fathers to spend more time with their kids by funding field trips to the Charlotte Bobcats games and other such outings. These extras have proved to be a successful experience and correlation for both the youth and parents.
Brown speaks to prisons, juvenile centers and group homes as an inspirational speaker, as well as church youth. Brown as surprised, about his invite to speak to church youth being the secular station 97.1 FM employs him.
Buster says he especially enjoys the opportunity to speak with the young people needing encouragement and the one’s that are looking to succeed against the odds. He feels a certain connection with that group, being in similar situations himself as a youth. Brown had a baby when he was fourteen (14) years old and also grew up surrounded by drug dealing relatives and a family that harbored other dysfunctions. Brown, was often recruited to serve as a drug runner, thus he understands the pitfalls that tempt many of today’s youth as well as the alternate alternatives.
Brown encourages people “to dream before they go to sleep. Dream and pray.” He describes himself as a person that loves God and believes in the teaching of Jesus Christ, but he doesn’t believe that Christians have to be stiff and stuffy all the time.
