“Let’s Rock ‘n Roll” The Brian Dawson Car & Bike Show story

July 11th, 2007

First and foremost Brand Newz would like to thank our team BNz reporter, Stephanie Carr for another great story, sent in from North Carolina, involving cars, music and bikes!

Now what does celebrity hip hop DJ’s Funkmaster Flex, K97.5’s Brian Dawson and DJ Greg Street have in common besides music?

Besides being three top radio personalities, Flex, Dawson and Street are all premier car culture fanatics. The three DJ’s host their own celebrity car and bike tours annually, which include automobiles from stars like Wyclef Jean, Cash Money Records Lil Wayne and Baby, Busta Rhymes, super-model, Tyson Beckford, Method Man, 50 Cent, Ludacris, NBA superstar, Tracy McGrady, hip hop Mogul, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, Lil’ Kim, Ashanti and Queen Latifah, and many more.

Flex’s and Street’s childhood fads have turned into multi-million dollar business for the two, in similar fashions. While Flex has hosted a number of car shows including his very own show on Spike TV, titled Ride with Funkmaster Flex, which also airs in Kenya and Australia. Street has intrigued and dazzled car enthusiasts from coast to coast with colorful ingenious creations of Suzuki bikes, Impalas and exotic cars, from car and bike club shops.

Dawson has helped to maximize youth participation in his North Carolina Car and Bike Show, through entertainment, and youth friendly programs and events including a local “PIMP” my ride competition. The biker culture is a ever so growing culture in North Carolina. The sports bike culture in North Carolina has become, in many ways, intertwined with daily life. Since the mid-1990s, the culture of hip-hop has embraced sports bikes, while rappers like Lil’ Wayne and DMX have made songs about their vehicles and biker boyz lifestyles.

Flex has stepped it up another notch and founded his very own custom car club, called Team Baurtwell. Baurtwell is one of the highest profile custom-car clubs around with members like Shaquille O’Neil, and musicians Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot and Faith Evans. Flex has been able to market and package anything related to automobiles including: racing ringtones of car engines SFXs, car lifestyle skits and shout outs of Flex voice, wallpaper images of custom cars from his tours and most recently his own custom designed, Ford Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition Funkmaster Flex Edition SUV’s.

Flex not only modifies and designs cars but he writes as well. Flex was recently, dubbed the “evangelist” of Hip Hop’s car culture, by The New York Times. Flex writes an authoritative automotive column for two of Hip Hop’s most read publications-The Source and Mobile Entertainment Magazine. Street’s and Flex’s knowledge of the automotive world has led them to numerous endorsement deals with some of automotives biggest heavy hitters in the game.
