“Who’s Your Daddy” The Allan Houston Story

June 11th, 2008

Allan Houston drives to improve the lives of young ones both on and off the court, through a number of programs. “The Father Knows Best” Basketball Retreat, involves a broad range of disciplines including, life skills, fundamental basketball sessions, entrepreneur training and economic empowerment studies.

Allan describes the 3rd annual retreat, as a faith-based weekend designed to bring fathers and sons closer together. After retiring from the New York Knicks in 2005, Houston began to focus on new endeavors. In 2001, Alan, started a non-profit venture with father, Wade Houston devised to assist community organizations in their efforts to reach youth, as well as, to reverse educational and social disparities.

Allan stated, “I remember my father being my basketball coach, my teacher, my mentor and my counselor. He was everything to me. I learned many lessons from him, and he was also someone I could count on for truth and guidance.”

Houston’s “The Father Knows Best” organization immediately gained the support of the NYC Board of Educator’s World Trade Center Fund. The organization gave a generous $100,000 donation.

Allan’s Life Enrichment Center, is a partnership with many prominent professional and corporate organizations including; the National Basketball Association, the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem, Citigroup, Smith and Barney, Business National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurships (NFTE), the Harlem YMCA and the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce (GHCC).

Alan hopes to increase support, through individual donations, corporate grants and government funding, while simultaneously helping the community strengthen its resources. The goal of Alan’s retreat is to build meaningful, long lasting relationships amongst the community leaders and youth within the five boroughs of New York and surrounding areas.

In 2006, the annual retreat hosted sixty (60) pairs of fathers and sons as participants. The weekend retreat offered musical guests, NBA superstars’ guest appearances, a father and son talent show, as well as, a parent and child picnic.

Houston stated,” Come join me and my father at this year’s Father Knows Best Retreat. You’re going to have an amazing time, be a part of something you’ll never forget. Remember father always knows best.”

Allan Houston also hosts a number of other special events including, his celebrity golf classic, in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, which raises funds to support of the Big Brother and Big Sisters Program, the Allan Houston Courtside Classroom, which allows less fortunate students to attend New York Knicks games on behalf of Alan.

Houston has established an Alan Scholarship, on behalf of his father Wade Houston for adolescents to attend the University of Tennessee and numerous other programs throughout the City of New York and his home state of Kentucky.
